Finding ways to address suicide and self-harm is a complex and fluid challenge. There is no universal approach, nor single solution. Our commissioning recognises that people with lived experience have critical contributions to make.

Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group transitional arrangements

From 2017 to 2022, NWMPHN supported the planning and delivery of the Macedon Ranges place-based suicide prevention trial. When it ended, we funded Macedon Ranges Shire Council to employ a coordinator to support transition to a new community-based model run by Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group (MRSPAG).

Targeted regional initiatives

Following the conclusion of three carefully designed multi-year trials, NWMPHN is consulting on the design of new programs to reduce suicide and suicidal ideation.

The program is called Targeted Regional Initiatives for Suicide Prevention and is being rolled out by all 31 primary health networks. It is an Australian Government initiative.

LGBTIQ+ mentoring

The LGBTIQ+ mentoring project provides peer support to address factors contributing to suicide. It does this by building resilience, enhancing social connectedness, boosting skills to navigate services and reducing stigma.

LGBTIQ+ suicide prevention training

From 2019 to 2022, NWMPHN commissioned LivingWorks Australia to deliver a pilot project in collaboration with LGBTIQ+ representatives, to adapt the ASIST and safeTALK evidence-based methods of suicide prevention and intervention.

The pilot was successful and second round of training was commissioned for 2023.

Suicide prevention workforce capacity building

Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) training provides clinicians with the opportunity to learn and implement an evidence-based therapeutic assessment and treatment model for people at risk of suicide.

NWMPHN commissioned CAMS-care to deliver its training program to CAREinMIND™ and Head to Health clinicians.

Support After Suicide

Support After Suicide is a free postvention and bereavement service for people in the NWMPHN catchment affected by suicide.

The provider, Jesuit Social Services, also delivers educational sessions to the health and community services workforce, community members and other professionals.
