General practice is the heart of our health system.

It is the first place to which people go when they, or someone for whom they care, feel unwell. It is the place where preventative health care – such as cancer screens or blood tests – starts to happen. It is the launch point for referrals to specialists, to mental health care, and to allied health support.

And when a patient receives care from a multidisciplinary team, it is the GP who stands at its centre.

We support general practice in multiple ways. We provide time-critical updates for GPs on evolving public health matters. We help navigate new systems such as MyMedicare. We offer education and training, as well as guided opportunities to explore new ways of delivering service.

We also advocate to governments for more flexible funding and more support for general practice. Because we know that a well-resourced general practice sector is critical to accessible and equitable patient care.

The general practice sector is undergoing the biggest change since Medicare was created in 1984.
